Dawn & Dusk – OBW #137 from If These Threads Could Talk

Thank you QT fabrics for providing Dawn & Dusk panels to make this fabulous OBW quilt.

Terri Butler & I designed a OBW with Dawn & Dusk in Adobe Illustrator first.

The version above was computer generated. I was not able to recreate the same hexagons exactly, but I stayed pretty close. I cut 3.25″ strips using my First-Choice Ruler, that yield 5″ finished hexies.

Hexies sorted by predominate color.

I created 10 ” stars by choosing 2 sets of equilateral triangles to make diamonds and used my Star 60 Tool to cut the side triangles.

hexies are moved around a lot during ...

OOPS, I made another OBW – #136 from If These Threads Could Talk

I was watching a video lecture on CTPub.com by Paula Nadlestern. Wow she is amazing, a true quilt artist! She inspired me to try some something. I whipped out my Star 60 Tool

I dug through my OBW stash and found this fabric by Laura Heine called A Bird in Hand. It had already been cut into 18″ repeats.

I cut my strips 3.25″ to yield 5″ finished hexies. I always use my First Choice ruler to cut my triangles.

I am constantly looking to see what else I can make from my 3.25″ strips that can ...

Pollinators – OBW #135 from If These Threads Could Talk

Pollinators by Robin Pickens for Moda Fabrics is absolutely beautiful and will be in shops in December 2026.

I cut my strips 3.25″ yielding a 5″ finished hexie. I love my Studio180 Design First Choice Rulers for cutting the equilateral triangles, it is fast and accurate. I cut diamonds for 5″ Star 60 units that make 10″ stars to add to my garden.

The bees are a buzzing in the garden created for them! I added 5″ and 10″ Hollow Cube 60’s made with my Star 60 Tool and Hollow Cube 60 Technique Sheet. I think they look ...

Steampunk Menagerie – OBW #134 from If These Threads Could Talk

Imagine a world where steam-powered technology remained the dominant form of advanced technology, set in the Victorian era.

In Steampunk Menagerie you see retro futuristic animals with distinctive style featuring brass, copper, gears, goggles and pocket watches. Combined with 60 degree angles, each hexagon tells its own story.

What might the future have looked like if it had been invented with steam engines and Victorian engineering instead of electronics and digital technology?

Thank you Jason Yenter & In the Beginning Fabrics for providing these fabulous fabrics from the Steampunk Menagerie fabric line.

I cut my strips 3.25″ wide to yield ...

I absolutely love this panel.

I was so surprised by how much color i got out of this panel. I thought it would be much darker. But it is brilliant with color.

April 2026 was one long roadtrip!

I started out at the New England Quilt Expo in Manchester New Hampshire. I was invited there By Bits “N” Pieces Quilt Shop to be the keynote speaker and teach a One Block Wonder workshop. And what a great workshop it was. I can’t wait to see their finished OBW’s!

I was home a week and then off to teach at AQS Paducah. What an honor to be invited to teach there. I taught 4 classes and gave a trunk show! Studio 180 Design Certified Instructors have a tendency to run in ...

Everyone Needs Magic Pins! from If These Threads Could Talk

I have the Extra Long & Quilting Magic Pins, which I use. I did not know Taylor Seville also had Applique, Silk and Patchwork Magic Pins.

They offer 2 fabulous “Try Me” packs. These packs give you a chance to see the variety Taylor Seville offers.

When I design a OBW, I number each column across the top of the quilt and across the bottom section. I have been cutting up scrap paper and numbering them for the number of columns I have. A tedious little job.

Magic pins have these great Flathead pins in Applique, Patchwork, Quilting, Alphabet and Extra ...

Night Garden – OBW #131 from If These Threads Could Talk

Night Garden panel by Rubin Design Studio, exclusively for eQuilter.com , measures 29″ x 44″.

I cut my strips 3.25″ to yield 5″ finished hexies. Night Garden produced 182 hexies. I could place 5.5 hexies or 11 columns across the top and bottom sections.

If you use a pointed tip Star 60 tool or First Choice ruler to cut your equilateral triangles, the same strip can be used to cut Star 60 diamonds. The 3.75″ strip above yielded a 6″ finished hexies and a diamond for a 6″ Star 60 Unit (12″ star), (Blunt tip ruler changes ...

Blue Fury – OBW #130 from If These Threads Could Talk

Jason Yenter tasked Terri Butler and I to re-imagine this beautiful panel “Blue Fury” from In The Beginning Fabrics. I made a One Block Wonder (OBW) quilt and Terri is making one her original OBW Jackets.

I wanted to see if the Celtic Chains borders would make good stars and hexies. Boy, did they ever! Using my First Choice Ruler I cut my strips 3.25″ to yield 5″ finished hexies.

I felt the design needed some large design elements. Using my Star 60 tool, I made 10″ finished Star 60 units from the Celtic Chains. I also created a ...

The Garden Gnome – OBW #129 from If These Threads Could Talk

Garden Gnomes symbolize good luck, protection, and prosperity stemming from European folklore where they were believed to be earth-dwelling spirits guarding treasure and helping plants grow at night, bringing fortune and warding off evil spirits.

Mushroom Man

This panel is by Rubin Design Studio exclusively for eQuilter.com. This panel measures 30″ x 44″. I love this panel. I call it The Mushroom Man. I cut my strips 3.25″ to yield 5″ finished hexes. I cut my equilateral triangles with my First Choice Rulers.

Santa’s Sleigh – OBW #127 from If These Threads Could Talk

As soon as I saw this panel I wanted it! I love the colors and the Santa! Santa’s Sleigh is by Rubin Design Studio’s exclusively for eQuilter. BUT, then I noticed the reindeer! Why were they behind the Santa’s sleigh??? I decided it must be a shift change. After all we know male reindeer lose their antlers in winter. So, this must be the female reindeer showing up to have Santa’s Back!

I cut my strips 3.25″ using my First Choice rulers for 5″ finished hexies. This panel yielded 176 hexies.

The 5″ finished star ...

Witchy Poo – OBW #126 from If These Threads Could Talk

The Witchy Poo panel was created by the Morris Creative Group for QT Fabrics. The panel measures 36″ x 42″. I love this panel. Its soft colors are so inviting.

My strips were cut at 3.25″ which yielded 5″ finished hexies.

I saved some hexies to combine to make 10″ finished Star 60 units.

The design process is underway. I started at the top and worked my way around the panel.

When I was happy with the design, I added half hexies from the border fabric to fill in the sides.

Withcy Poo measures 72″ x 64″ unquilted. It ...
